SMVA 2010, Come and have an experience with music. Expect everything. 2 years ago VIP COUTURE PRE-SHOW The award pre-show at this year's SMVA has been designed to be an altogether different and exciting visual experience quite unlike anything youve ever seen before. Special Creative Director for the awards, Namibian-born world-acclaimed show producer Jan Malan Umzingeli (Face of Africa, America's Next Top Model) is enhancing the basic red carpet format by hosting a live and exclusive couture production at the poolside of the award venue from 6:00PM - 7:30PM, featuring stunning models donning exclusive collections from the continent's boldest, most accomplished international designers and labels. In line with our vision, we have commissioned top designers from across Africa (profiled below) to create their signature looks and concoct a sumptuous style buffet for the evening. David Tlale (South Africa) Established in 2002, the brand David Tlale has made strong statements in terms of the richness of the African heritage and its offerings in terms of materials and design possibilities. Known for the youthful elegance and boldness in his work, David Tlale has shaken the safe and predictable, making way for a more earthy and honest approach in his couture. Dax Martin (South Africa) The South African fashion scene has been altered by the very presence of Dax Martins vision. He is basically known for his swimwear designs, but he has proven himself to be master of personal space, as was revealed by his lingerie line early this year. His designs captivate and seduce by a new appreciation for the human form. Jewel by Lisa (Nigeria) Feminine and Vibrant, Shine and Texture, are just a few of the words used to describe the works of JBL. Started in 2004, Lisa Folawiyo has turned around the conceptual use of Ankara and also brought a favourable blend of ornamental finishing with the brave, smart new use of colour on the prints. She has redefined the modern African womans look. Very tres chic! Lanre da Silva Ajayi (Nigeria) LDA is her brand, and her work is in demand among the fashion conscious. Haute Couture is her niche and she does a great job with it. Strong, yet tasteful influences from mid-20th century are evident in her jackets and evening wear, bringing a strong nostalgic element into her work. Since 2005, she has had a greater pull on the contemporary woman, proving that to wear her styles well, you have to carry them (and yourself) equally well. MOMO (Nigeria) Fati Asibelua has been going strong in fashion circles from New York to London, clothing the most beautiful models and showcasing her homeland. Often described as alluring and contemporary, MOMO has braved the use of traditional patterns and modern shapes. MOMO has everything for everyone from shoes to fabrics and patented accessories. Odio Mimonet (Nigeria) Beauty in the feminine form, is the philosophy of her couture line. Driven to be chic, unfussy and breathtaking, only a visionary like herself could capture such an ambitious goal, but it helps to have the spirit of an answer. Inspired by impressionist painter Monets works, Odio Oseni accepts that every woman is an individual and she works to make the individual emerge, looking both unique and beautiful. Tiffany Amber (Nigeria) Folake Folarin-Coker is easier experienced than explained. Since 1998, she has risen to the forefront of the fashion world by merit of her styles and interpretation of the place of tradition in fashion. Celebrated in every place she has showcased her work, from New Yorks fashion week (she was called for an encore the next edition), to the MNet face of Africa to the Cape Town fashion week, Tiffany Amber is iconic. Zizi Cardow (Nigeria) Ethnic fabric at home on the modern woman: This is how Zizi Cardows work comes across to those taken by surprise by the bold, yet classy style of her designs. Women look amazing in her cuts and she has been doing this since 2000. If the strength of her styles is anything to go by, she will remain at the vanguard of African fashion, where shes always been. Mustafa Hasanali (Tanzania) African fashion without borders is one way of regarding Mustafa Hassanalis body of work. His designs are dedicated to women of power, confidence and prestige. His gowns are breathtaking. It is a testament to African fashion when a woman wears Mustafa Hassanalis gowns and shes transformed into a vision of classic beauty. Mai Atafo (Nigeria) Armed with an impressive clientele from Nollywood actors (Stephanie Okereke, Stella Damascus, Ramsey Nouah), to beauty queens (Omowunmi Akinnifesi, Munachi Abii, Adaeze Igwe), and stylish musicians (Banky W, Omawunmi, Dbanj), the MAI ATAFO INSPIRED labels signature bespoke crested blazers and striking gowns are instantly recognizable, buoyed by designer Mais versatile yet smart approach to couture; an approach that seamlessly blends the essence of African and Western cosmopolitan styles into functional, classic pieces. 2 years ago PERFORMING LIVE MO HITS Mohits is arguably the biggest pop music collective in urban African music, boasting an array of talent that have shined across the continent and beyond. Led by hit producer Don Jazzy, with mainstays Dbanj, Wande Coal, DPrince, Dr Sid, and K-Switch, Mohits are perennial heavyweights in African pop, boasting a slew of top radio tracks, superlative performances, award-winning albums: No Long Thing, Entertainer and Run Down from chief whip Dbanj; Wande Coals bombastic Mushin To Mohits and Dr Sids chilled-out hit of the summer, Turning Point. P SQUARE Twins Peter and Paul Okoye have consistently churned out hit songs to entertain the continent and the world. P Square are doubtlessly the most recognizable faces on the continent, thanks to sold-out concerts all over Africa, America, and Europe. They have together released four bestselling albums, including Last Night, Game Over, and Danger. And this year the SMVA, like the rest of the world, once again takes notice having nominated the act in five categories, including Best Video and Best Cinematography. BANKY W & EMPIRE MATES Banky Ws slick falsetto, matchless songwriting and commanding stagecraft, have catapulted him into the contemporary music spotlight. He was born in the United States to Nigerian parents, but his talent and showmanship have done him proper justice and made him a top act on the continent, recently producing huge hits such as Lagos Party and Strong Ting from his second solo album, The W Experience. Banky W has the highest number of nominations with seven nods, including Best Male, and Best Video. Bankys Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) already has two young heavy hitters as protgs Wizkid (trending with singles Holla At Your Boy) and rapper Skales (Heading for a Grammy and Ori Mi). 9ICE & ALAPOMEJI CREW 9ice has made a return to the height of his eponymous second album, Gongo Aso, albeit on the back of controversy. He has, however, ridden the waves of the controversy with a mixtape and a new album as a follow up to Tradition, released in 2009. Performing live, 9ice will be accompanied by members of his Alapomeji crew, including Snow, Wise, Ajayi brothers, and Kayefi. STORM ALL STARS Storm All Stars includes Naeto C, YQ, Sasha, General Pype, Sauce Kid and GT The Guitarman. As individual artists and as a collective, they have been behind some of the biggest urban pop hits on the continent, boasting a robust collection of successful albums and singles. Though the line-up has changed over the years, the core essence of the collective remains strong. TIMAYA Timaya and Dem Mama Soldiers are easily one of the most vocal voices from the South of Nigeria. Timaya is, without question, one of the most consistently chart-topping acts in Nigeria, boasting three successful albums: My Story, Gift and The Grace, The Rebirth. Timayas dancehall hybrid music borrows heavily from his gritty background and life experiences. ASA Asas breakthrough debut album properly introduced the world to her African neo-soul music. Two years and numerous accolades later, she looks set to revisit previous heights with her new album, Beautiful Imperfection. The singer-songwriter has been hailed as one of the best acts from the continent in this last decade. Asa has morphed into an even bigger act, redefining her sound into an urban jazzy fusion of her Nigerian and French roots. DEEP LEVEL One of the biggest rap groups to come out of South Africa, Deep Level are hailed as frontrunners of the South African hip hop scene. Their music finds a nice middle ground between the modern and the traditional to provide some of the most infectious music of the urban scene. They are true students of the international hip-hop movement, as is evident in their videos, one of which, We Run This City, is nominated for an SMVA in the Best Duo or Group category. R2BEES R2Bees, alongside MoHits Wande Coal, provided one of the biggest singles of the summer. The Ghanaian exports translate the energy of their urban lifestyle into their music. Touted as the future of West African music, the collective seek to entertain Africa with a mixture of rap, R&B, and traditional Ghanaian sounds. DAMA DO BLING The inimitable lady of the bling was born Ivannea Jose in Maputo, Mozambique, and has been dubbed the queen of Mozambique hip-hop, whilst favourably compared to Lil Kim. She successfully blends crunk hip-hop with Marrabenta. Dama has collaborated with artists like Bleksem, Lizha James and Sasha (on Best Hip Hop Video nomination Put It Down). She is as talented away from music as she is on it as shes also a designer/stylist a published writer. Dama Do Bling has been nominated in four categories, including Best Video, and Best Female Video. Lizha James has two nominations including Best Southern Video. LIZHA JAMES Lizha James started off in life as a musical child prodigy. When she was 12, she joined a group Babilonia, at 14 she left them to join a house music group called Electro Base. She launched her solo career at age 17 with her debut album Watching You in 2000. Over the next decade, Lizha James has been growing stronger and more assured as an artist with a slew of hit singles to her credit. Her nomination in the Best Female Video category for the song Estilo Xakhale is a testament to her genius as an artist and performer. TONIKS Toniks might be called the Kevin Lytle of Uganda, but Allan Ampaire (or Toniks) retains an original edge all his own. Toniks is notable for lyrical and video content, and has enjoyed critical and commercial acclaim for his music. Having shared the stage with P-Square, Beanie man, his presence at the SMVAs was always inevitable. 2 years ago Meet Your Host: UTI Reality TV star, actor, and model, Uti Nwachukwu, hosts this years awards. Uti, a recording artist himself, continues in the tradition of performers hosting the SMVAs (The 2008 and 2009 awards were hosted by Dbanj and Darey Art-Alade, respectively). Uti will draw on his recent fame and success, having just won the 2010 season of the Big Brother reality show, Big Brother All-Stars. Through that platform, Uti connected to audiences on an unprecedented scale. He has proven himself capable entertainer, and performer combining his trademark affability and charm with an unforced coolness. Uti began his career as a housemate on the third edition of the Big Brother Africa reality show in 2008, and was evicted on the 42nd day. He returned to the Big Brother house this past July, and was eventually crowned the winner in October, walking away with the $200,000 prize money. He switched lanes after returning from the first stint on BBA, to launch his singing career, when he released his debut single, Go Down, which offered Nigerians his rare blend of Soul and R&B. 2 years ago SOUNDCITY HIRES JAN MALAN FOR AWARDS The award pre-show at this year's Soundcity Music Video Awards on November 20 is reportedly planned to be a full-on fashion show production quite unlike anything domestic audiences have ever seen before. The Soundcity production team, led by Namibia-born internationally acclaimed show director/choreographer South African Jan Malan Umzingeli (behind such visual feasts as Face of Africa and the Models walking on water fashion show for Tyra Banks Americas Next Top Model) are enhancing the basic red carpet format by putting together a exclusive live couture runway tease at the poolside of 5-star Eko Hotel & Suite, Victoria Island from 6:00PM - 7:30PM. The show will be featuring stunning models donning exclusive collections from the continent's boldest, most accomplished international designers and labels. Jan Malan has commissioned up to 10 top designers from across Africa (including South Africans David Tlale and Dax Martin, with a smattering of Nigerian labels MOMO, Lanre da Silva, Mai Atafo Inpired, Tiffany Amber, and Zizi Cardow) to create their signature looks and concoct what they promise would be creative eye candy for specially invited guests before the awards proper, as a sort of sumptuous style buffet for the evening. Jan Malan would also be producing and directing the main event, which, along with the red carpet extravaganza, will be broadcast live on DSTV to a wide African audience. 2 years ago BANKY W, DAMA DO BLING, FALLY IPUPA, TINASHE AND PSQUARE LEAD AT THE 2010 SOUNDCITY MUSIC VIDEO AWARDS After months of anticipation, the wait is over!
