The seasoned artist, who comes from Limpopo, has just released her second Afro jazz album, Ndifhuludza Magharamba.
In this album Mokwena shows that she has been in this game a long time. When she first started she was into disco, but she has now crossed to African jazz, tinged with a traditional sound called khelobedu.
"It took me many years to realise that this is where my strength lies," she says. "I went for the cultural sound because I feel it is important to sing about who I am. I added jazz with Venda, Xitsonga and Sepedi sounds," Mokwena says.
She says her songs are inspired by her personal life and are about everyday events. "In my songs I tell real stories about people. The album has songs about love and about women's issues. There is also a tribute to my late son, who passed away four months ago," she says. "In the song Lituka Molilo I talk about what many women experiences almost every day: Wives waiting for years for their husbands to return home."
She also does a lot of community work. She visits schools and distributes school uniforms to pupils. "As a motivational speaker I always encourage young people and adults to use their talent and to work hard to succeed in life," she says.
Mokwena is well known for her vocal prowess and she has vast experience in the music industry, having worked with a number of local musicians.
Before venturing on her solo career, Mokwena spent many years composing and backing many artists. She has worked with musicians such as Ringo Madlingozi, Rhythmic Elements, Oskido, the Mothiba Twins (Revolution), Louis Mhlanga, Malatji and Selaelo Selota.
